Restoring Your Data
How to get your vault onto a new phone—by direct phone transfer, or by importing an encrypted backup file.
Moving to a new phone, same platform
The standard new-phone setup transfer handles it: going iOS to iOS or Android to Android, the migration you run when the new phone starts moves VeraLocker over together with its vault. Open the app, unlock with your vault passphrase or Face ID, and everything is there—no export or import needed.
Moving to a different platform
Because the vault exists only on your phone, moving from iPhone to Android (or back) has no automatic transfer. The encrypted backup file from Settings > Backup is the bridge.
- 1 On the old phone, open Settings, then Backup, and export the encrypted backup file.
- 2 Save the file somewhere reachable from the new phone—a copied-to cloud drive, a computer, or a file you can send to yourself.
- 3 Install VeraLocker on the new phone and finish setup.
- 4 Open Settings, then Backup, import the file, and enter the backup passphrase to restore your vault, attachments, and share contacts.
Automatic backups on the way out
With automatic backups on, fresh encrypted files keep appearing in the app's Backups folder while you use the app—on iPhone they're visible in the Files app under On My iPhone → VeraLocker → Backups, and on Android the app's backup list can share one anywhere. Copy the newest file to your computer or your own cloud drive before switching platforms or wiping the old phone, then restore it on the new install with that profile's vault passphrase—exactly like a manual backup.
Your sharing identity after a restore
A backup carries your sharing identity—the address your contacts use to send you shares. When you restore a backup or reinstall the app, VeraLocker asks what to do with it.
- 1 Keep it to carry on as before: your QR code and contacts keep working, and new shares arrive on this phone. Any other installation of that identity becomes read-only for cloud sharing, with an option to restore access there.
- 2 Create an independent copy to start fresh: the old address stops working for this vault, and contacts need your new QR code before they can send to you.
- 3 Either way, cloud shares nobody picks up within 30 days are deleted, so ask contacts to resend anything you missed.
If content is missing
Check that the transfer or import came from the right device, and that you unlocked with the same vault passphrase or Face ID as the old phone. If an item really is gone, restore from the most recent encrypted backup file you have—another reason to export one after meaningful changes.
Prevent future data loss
A backup file only protects you if it lives somewhere other than the phone—copy it to your computer or your own cloud storage after exporting. Turn on the app's backup reminders so a fresh export is never far away, and export again before wiping or trading in the old phone.
